Elderly and disabled cash gifting residents of two bedbug-infested Des Moines apartment buildings gave polite applause to the head of the buildings' management company Friday as he promised to make things right.

"Seeing is believing, and I haven't seen anything yet," said Sam Bell, a two-year resident of Elsie Mason Manor who spent 18 months fighting a bedbug problem in his apartment. "The first time I'd seen bedbugs was when I came here."

Until I branched out a couple years back from working with Unix systems to supporting Linux servers, I haven't really ran into this problem: you type “reboot”, “init 0″, or “shutdown” as root and… nothing happens. Or the system starts shutting down but then stalls on unmounting a filesystem or unloading a module. I think this occurred once to a associate of mine who was rebooting a Solaris machine, but this is a widespread issue with Linux.
